How Does Anthros Fit Different Heights?

Today, let's focus on a key consideration for anyone in the market for an office chair: the critical importance of height adjustment. If you’re wondering, "Am I too tall?” OR “Am I too short for the Anthros chair?", we have answers. While it can be challenging to find the right fit, we recognize that selecting the ideal chair is essential for your well-being, comfort, and productivity. Let's examine the several body shapes that the Anthros chair accommodates and why it can be the ideal choice for you.

What Makes Anthros So Unique?

Let's start by discussing what makes the Anthros chair special. This chair isn't your average office or gaming chair—it's the result of intensive research and development, with unmatched comfort and support in mind. Here are a few important points:

Two-Part Back System: This patent-pending design conforms to the curves of your body to give your upper and lower back specific support.

Contoured Foam Seat with Cloudfloat Technology: The seat's design minimizes pressure points and produces a cloud-like sitting sensation.

Tilt Mechanism: The Anthros chair has a tilt mechanism that, in contrast to typical reclining chairs, is intended to lessen tiredness while preserving ideal posture.

"Am I Too Tall or Too Short for the Anthros chair?"

The Anthros chair is adaptable for people of all shapes and sizes. Using anthropometric data (average measurements of the human body), 3D human modeling, and extensive seating expertise and research, the Anthros chair was designed to accommodate the majority of the population. Let’s take a look at each feature of the chair:

“Will the back system work for really short or really tall people?”

Two-part back system: There were several considerations taken into account in the design of this system; namely the position of the back pads and the pivot points.

  • Low back pad position: This pad is designed to hit the top of the pelvis. And research shows that the height of a pelvis only varies by about 4cm between shorter and taller individuals. A tall person sits farther back on the seat and the pad is in its highest position for a tall person, supporting the top of the pelvis. A shorter person sits shallower on the seat and as the low back pad comes forward, it rotates slightly downward and will hit the shorter person at the top of the pelvis.
  • Upper back pad: This pad is intended to simply offer gentle support since the low back pad is responsible for aligning the spine and holding it there. Although the upper back pad will make contact in a slightly different place, the user will get the needed thoracic stability and the taper allows shoulders rolling back and freedom of arm movement.

We tested our chairs on persons 4’11”- 6’8” and found that the chair supported them in an effortless upright position.

Contoured Cushion with Pressure-Relieving Cutouts

The Anthros seat cushion was created with the knowledge and experience of designing wheelchair seat cushions for over 70 years, with a focus on providing care for the most vulnerable sitting population. Anthropometric data was used to start the design process, and 3D human simulation was subsequently used to modify the design to get the lowest peak pressures. The first designs were constructed based on the human form, but we thought we could achieve lower pressures than what we were seeing. Peak pressures were significantly lowered after we created empty pressure relief cutouts beneath the seat bones. The size and design of these domes were then refined to guarantee that subjects of all shapes and sizes would experience the same benefits.

The seat depth and width were intended to accommodate a large range of heights and sizes. The depth is determined by the low back pad placement.

“What if I have greater than the 2-3 finger ergonomic rule of seat depth because I’m tall?”

This ergonomic standard was developed to ensure maximum pressure distribution along the femurs and buttocks. In a standard chair, the fact that you have less femoral contact on the seat can result in high peak pressures and DISCOMFORT.

BUT, the cushion of the Anthros chair is unlike any other. The contours, pressure-relieving cutouts, and Cloudtex fabric under the cover provide pressure reduction unlike any other! Pressure mapping shows that someone who is 6’8 in the Anthros chair has lower peak pressures than when sitting in a mesh chair or standard foam cushion. Even with greater than 2-3 finger widths between the back of the knee and the chair!

“Will the Anthros chair fit me if I’m short?”

Since the seat depth is determined by the low back pad, we have shown that people 4’11” and up can benefit from the Anthros chair. The pressure relieving cutouts extend to this shallower position on the seat so the user will experience the comfort of low peak pressures. We provide a foot support with each chair so that shorter users have adequate leg support and feet do not dangle.
