What is

PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME

This syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, located in the buttocks behind the gluteus maximus, spasms and irritates the sciatic nerve. Any swelling, spasm, or tightening of the piriformis muscle can affect the sciatic nerve.

The result is pain that originates in the buttocks/hip area and radiates down the leg on the side that is affected

WHERE IS THE

PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE?

It starts at the lower spine and connects to the upper surface of each femur (thighbone). It stabilizes the hip joint and works to rotate the hip and turn the leg and foot outward. It runs diagonally, with the sciatic nerve running vertically directly beneath it, although in some people the nerve can run through the muscle.
